MathSummer

Mainland High School · CCTT

These web-based activities were developed, during summer sessions from 1997 through 1999, by students at Mainland High School, located in Daytona Beach, FL. As part of Mainland's CCTT grant, the students were given permission by the book's publisher to convert the ancillary materials of the County's adopted Algebra 1 Textbook into html format.

Each member of the team with the rectangle having the larger perimeter for the value of x = 1 received 20 points. Find the value of each perimeter.

7. Team A? _____________________________________ 8. Team B? _____________________________________

9. Which contestants received 20 points each? _________________________________________________________________________

For Round 2, each contestant was required to find the greatest Common Factor (GCF) for several polynomials, then add the GCF's to form a new polynomial. This was a timed contest where the winner received 40 points and the person in second place received 20 points.

10. Complete Fred's table.

Polynomial

GCF

7y3 + 49 y
78y5 + 64y3
6y2 + 5 y
6y 3 + 8

11. What was Fred's new polynomial in standard form? _____________________________________________________

12. Complete Sarah's table.

Polynomial

GCF

5y + 5
2y5 + 4 y3
3y4 + 6y
10y2 + 6y

13. What was Sarah's new polynomial in standard form? _____________________________________________________

14. Complete Chuck's table.

Polynomial

GCF

9y3 + 3y
8y5 + 9y4
6y5 + 6
12y3 + 6y2

15. What was Chuck's new polynomial in standard form? _____________________________________________________

16. Complete Jeannie's table.

Polynomial

GCF

6y7 + 3y3
10y3 + 15y2
9y + 18
8y5 + 2y3

17. What was Jeannie's new polynomial in standard form? _____________________________________________________
