We chose to use a Jeamar three-phase NLT 8000 winch because it is compact, runs off of the power supplied by the barge, has a very high torque rating, good line speed, high lifting capacity, and is very well-suited to our application. We chose to add the following four options:
- a rotary limiting switch which will limit the amount of cable let down and pulled up so that we will not damage the centerboard
- a grooved drum which helps in tight spaces to assist with level winding and unwinding and also helps to reduce excessive rope friction
- a electromagnetic brake, which is automatically activated in the event of a power interruption, will stop the winch and hold the load securely
- a corrosion resistant package will help lengthen the time between service and replacement of the winch and its parts due to the fact that our winch will be used in a marine environment.
