Our device will be using 2D sonar, this is not as accurate of a display as 3D but this is all we need to detect oncoming objects. Our sonar device will be hinged at the bottom leading edge of the centerboard so that at any depth the sonar will always be facing forward. When retracted, the sonar will still be facing forward but can be retracted far enough to be prtotected by the steel housing.
We chose to use the Echo Pilot FLS Platinum Video System which has a 200 meter forward range and built in GPS.
