Interpreting the Data
Metric Measures

 

Have each PERSON in each GROUP complete their own graph. Direct them to scale their graphs to completely fill their sheet of graph paper - no "comic-strip" graphs. The scales of the x-axis and on the y-axis do NOT have to match. After plotting their data, they are to place a small, tight circle around each data point. Next they should use a straightedge to determine the position of the line of best fit for their data.

Mark, with small arrows, and label two "grid points" that lie on their line of best fit. Use the co-ordinates of those grid points to calculate the slope and y-axis intercept of their line of best fit.

Write the line's equation using the names of the variables (not "x" and "y"). ____________

1. If the object you used were 91 cm high, what would the length of the shadow? ____________
 
2. Find the height of an object that would make a shadow 43 cm in length. _________________
 
3. Find the height of an object that would make a shadow 61 cm in length. _________________
 
4. Explain how your line would be different had you collected the data at noon.

7. If your school has a flagpole, measure its shadow and determine its height. ____________. Check with the building maintenance staff to determine the accuracy of your answer.
