Pictoral Graphs

In statistics it is often helpful to give a pictoral representation of a set data.

6. A line plot is constructed by drawing a portion of a number line and placing dots above the line for each occurence of a value. Below are a set of scores on an Algebra test.

73

74 73 69 74
74 76 78 80 81
76 69 90 88 78
81 80 76 90 80

6a. Finish constructing the line plot below by continuing to number the line and plotting the last  four rows of scores.

7. A histogram is a bar graph that has no spaces between consecutive bars. It has vertical and horizontal scales and is based on intervals. Below a histogram has been started for the algebra scores. The intervals are by 5 consecutive scores. The first bar represents 2 score from 65-69.

7a. Label and complete the vertical and horizontal axes.
7b. Graph the last three rows of scores.

8.  Frequencies can also be displayed in a line graph called a frequency polygon. Below is a histogram.

8a. Construct a frequency polygon by connecting the midpoints of the tops of the bars of the histogram, as shown above.
8b. Connect the first point to the origin and the last point to the other end of the horizontal axis.
