Solving Systems with Algebra Tiles
In lesson 9.3 you learned how to use algebra tiles to solve systems of equations by using elimination by addition. Use the same concepts to solve the problems by elimination by multiplication.
10. Use algebra tiles to represent this system of equations.

11. By what number should you multiply the
second equation in order to eliminate the 3y terms by addition?
| 12. Multiply the second equation by the number you found in Exercise 11. Represent the equation with algebra tiles. In the top two sections of the diagram, sketch representations of the first equation in its original form and the second equation in the form you just created. |

| 13. Add the two equations, and represent the resulting equation with algebra tiles. Complete the diagram with a sketch of this equation. | |||||
| 14. Solve the resulting equation. What is the result?
| 15. Use your result to substitute the correct number of unit tiles for x in one of the original equations, and solve for y. | |||||
