Solving Systems with Algebra Tiles

In this activity, you will use algebra tiles to solve systems of equations by substitution and by elimination by multiplication.

Materials:

positive and negative (red): x-tiles and y-tiles
positive and negative (red): unit tiles

1. Use tiles to represent this system of equations.
{ x +2y = 4
2x + 3y = 6
Sketch your representation in the diagram. 2x2
2. Describe how you would solve the first equation for x. What is your result?

3. Represent the result with tiles, and sketch it in the space below.
4. Use the tiles that represent x in the equation from Exercise 3 and substitute them for x in the second equation. Since the second equation calls for 2x, you will need to double the tiles that represent x. Sketch your result in the diagram to the right. 1x1
5. Describe how you would solve this equation for y. What is the result?
