These web-based activities were developed, during summer sessions from 1997 through 1999, by students at Mainland High School, located in Daytona Beach, FL. Writing Linear Equations in Point-Slope and Standard Form

 

If you know the slope of a line and the coordinates of one point on the line, you can write an equation of the line by using the point-slope form. For a given point (x, y) on a nonvertical line with slope m, the point-slope form of a linear equation is y - y1 = m(x − x1).

You can also find an equation of a line if you know the coordinates of two points on the line. First, find the slope of the line. Then write the line's equation using the point-slope form or standard form.

 

Directions: Write the standard form of an equation of the line that passes through the given point and has the given slope.

4x − y = 7

6x − y = −44

10x − 2y = −1

 

3x − 4y = −24

y = 7

x − y = 5

Directions: Write the point-slope form of an equation of the line that passes through each pair of points.

y − 3 = −1/7 (x − 6)

y − 7 = −2/11 (x − 10)

y − 5 = 9/8 (x − 8)

 

y + 6 = −1/4 (x − 5)

y − 2 = −(x −9)

y + 10 = 6/5 (x + 6)
