Day 2 Classwork
Letters in algebra are called variables because their values can vary.
Note that for a product of a number and a variable, the number is written first.
Example: the product of x and 10 is 10x, not x10.
| Write an algebraic expression for each verbal expression. | |
| a. m increased by 5 | b. the difference of x and 9 |
| c. 7 times the product of x and t | d. 5 greater than half of a number t |
| Write two different verbal expressions for each algebraic expression. | |
| a. 9t | b. 8 + a |
| c. 5y + 10x | d. 7 - 3y |
| Exponent Drills: Make a mental
estimate when evaluating expressions so 53 will equal (5) times (5) which is 25 then 25 times (5) = 125. |
|
| a. 35 = (3) (3) (3) (3) (3) = 243 | b. 43 = |
| c. x4 | d. g3 |
| e. h1 | f. i5 |
| g. w2 | h. v3 |
