From: K A Duhring To: colwell@mindspring.com Subject: Re: Mainland Project Date: Friday, October 30, 1998 5:52 PM Cathy: You can find answers to almost all of your questions by going to the Turtle Time web page and looking at the Witherington and Martin manual under Beach Lighting. (www.swflorida.com/turtletime/lighting) We also have extra hard copies of this manual for your reference which I would be happy to send if you provide a mailing address. We don't know any lighting engineers in your area, but I was hoping the students might be able to get some help with light meters from one or more of the lighting companies I provided. This is an area none of us has had time to venture into. If you need another invention idea, one of the biggest problem lights out on the beach are white or clear globe lights mounted on poles on seawalls and around pools. These lights are difficult to control and many people paint them black on the ocean side. This is only a temporary fix because the paint chips and peels. If someone could figure out a way to either replace the globe or invent a shield to install on the ocean side so you cannot see them from the beach, these lights would not have to be replaced (ideal but possibly costly solution). As far as turtle statistics go, we have to monitor nesting trends for many years to draw any conclusions about the effectiveness of a light management program. Sea turtles are mysterious creatures and their nest numbers vary naturally from year to year. We have pretty good data for sea turtles in Volusia County dating back to 1992, but it is not currently available on the web. I 'll try to respond to your messages as soon as possible. Just want to warn you this is a very busy time with end of the year sea turtle reports. I am currently planning to be in Daytona Beach for meetings November 9-10. If you are interested, we can set up a meeting to talk about this (if that's not cheating). I have another meeting scheduled for Wednesday afternoon (Nov 11) and don't know what time it will be done. I may be able to meet after 3:30 pm that day as well. Karen ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
