Two teacher driven activities
Guest Speaker
- The teacher will survey the class by asking them to brainstorm a list of
what character traits they believe future employers are looking for in new
hires.
- The teacher will then list these items on chalkboard, overhead or some
other visual means.
- The teacher will lead a discussion about the traits, emphasizing honesty,
integrity and ethics.
- The teacher will have a guest speaker come to the classroom and talk about
the importance of honesty and integrity on the job.
- The students will be given an opportunity to ask the guest speaker
questions.
- The students will then develop a paper (at least one page) summarizing the
guest speaker’s comments and discussion in class.
Computer Ethics
- The teacher will discuss how computer programs are developed: by whom,
where, what kinds, time involved. The teacher will group students and have
them brainstorm ideas about the development of software and the monetary
cost.
- The students will brainstorm ideas in groups and then share their ideas
with the class.
- The teacher will discuss the financial implications of the development of
a particular program.
- The students will decide on a wage for the programmer and other costs
involved in the development of software.
- The student will calculate the cost of development including packaging,
expertise of programmers, research required, distribution, marketing , and
anything else the student believes is necessary.
- The teacher will discuss the licensing procedure that accompanies software
programs.
- The students will define the following terms: software piracy, shareware
programs, free ware programs and site licenses.
- The teacher will discuss the illegal use of programs that are copyrighted.
- The students will answer the following questions as a follow-up activity:
- If a program cost $29.95 at Computer World, how many programs would have
to be sold to pay all the fees that were discussed above?
- If you were hired as a programmer to develop software that would have a
price tag of $29.95 and would receive 5% of all packages sold, how much
would you make if the store sold 500 copies?
- If Jane Banks buys one copy of the software above and gives it to 5 of her
friends, how much money would the programmer lose?
- If Jane Banks’ 5 friends give the program to 5 of their friends, how
many people will have "stolen" the software. How much money would
the programmer have lost?
- Write a one page paper describing the need for copyright laws based on the
financial outcomes you have just calculated.
