This activity was developed by a student or students at Mainland High School which is located in Daytona Beach, FL.   It is still a "work in progress" with editing and improvements yet to come.

1.  Research the number of games each team in major league baseball has won so far this season. You should be able to find this information in the sports section of a daily newspaper or on the World Wide Web.

2. Use the data you gathered in exercise 1 to make a back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot of the wins in the National League and the American League.

3. Using the completed stem-and-leaf plot, compare the records of National League and American League teams. Is one team much better than all of the others? Is one team much worse that all the others?

4. Select the team that you consider to be either the best or the worst in major league baseball. Find (or compute) the team's winning percentage.

5. Record the outcomes of the team's next five games. Sketch a reasonable graph showing how the team's winning percentage changed during this five-game period.

6. Write a newspaper article about the best or worst team in major league baseball. Include the graph from exercise 5 and note any trends you see.

Your student is about to start a project for module 1 titled Change, Patterns, and Expressions. In this module, your student will be studying mathematical expressions and properties, as well as learning how to represent data graphically. During the study of this module, your student will be working on a project involving sports statistics. The following is a list of activities your student must complete for this project.

1.  Research the number of games each team in major league baseball has won so far this season. He or she should be able to find this information in the sports section of a daily newspaper, or the World Wide Web.

2. Use the data you gathered in exercise 1 to make a back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot of the wins in the National League and the American League.

3. Using the completed stem-and-leaf plot, compare the records of National League and American League teams. Determine if one team much better or much worse than all of the others.
