Despite their fictional appearance in children's literature and fairy tales, there are countries in the world today that still have kings, queens, and other people of royal blood. In fact, there are more than four dozen reigning monarchs in countries such as Spain, Morroco, Lesotho, Nepal, and the Netherlands.

In Britain, Kings and Queens are descendants of royal parents. A reigning King makes his wife a Queen. A reigning Queen makes her husband a Prince. Most royal families live in palaces.

Imagine that you have been invited to participate in a treasure hunt at the royal palace. The king informs his guests that the families treasures were buried on the palace grounds hundreds of years ago and that only clues were left behind to locate them. Can you help the king find the royal treasures?

There are three treasures buried on the palace grounds. Use the clues to help you find them. Use the coordinate grid provided to show where they are buried.

1. Where is the gold necklace buried? Draw it on the coordinate grid. Then list its coordinates.

2. Where is the treasure chest buried? Draw it on the coordinate grid. Then list the coordinates.

3. Where is the crown buried? Draw it on the coordinate grid. Then list the coordinates.

Now create your own treasure hunt game by using the concepts you have learned. Will the opponents take turns guessing the location of the objects? Will the players work independently? How will you use the slopes to determine the location of the hidden treasures?

Once you have outlined your plan you may go back and rework any aspect of the game. Then play your game with an opponent to see if its challenging enough!
