Project at Mainland High School, Daytona Beach, FL
I am the sponsor of a group of students who want to develop a technological
project about alternative biomass fuels. Our project is part of a competition
sponsored by UCF, entitled ISTF. (http://istf.ucf.edu) The Internet Science
and Technology Fair (ISTF) is a real world science program designed to
encourage teams of middle and high school students and their teachers to
explore Internet information resources and collaborate via e-mail with
scientists and engineers. Together, they develop Project Homepages which
focus on National Critical Technologies vital to our nations economy and
security.
We chose Environmental Quality as our National Critical Technology Standard
(http://istf.ucf.edu/How/StepbyStepGuide/Step2/) in the technological area
of 'pollution,' the sub-area of 'waste management'. In addition to conducting
background research, we are required to develop a technological advancement
(http://istf.ucf.edu/How/StepbyStepGuide/Step4/HighSchool/) that will help
to promote advances in our chosen area.
Component 3 of the project is to show two undergraduate or graduate degree
programs that will support this field of work. Once we locate such programs,
we link the college or university web page to our web site. Please view our
education page from our first place project last year, Turtle Lights,
http://mainland.cctt.org/istf.
Our first request is for permission to use your Civil and Environmental
Engineering deparatment logo on our web site. In searching the Internet, we
came across your program and would like to use it as the basis for a model
to create a future program for students interested in future employment in
biomass technologies. Our second request is for information about the classes
that make up the Civil and Environmental Engineering program.
Specifically, we would like to know if you offer classes that contain
curriculum covering methane and municipal sewage plant treatment. We would
then use course description information to supplement the education component
of our project.
A quick response, either positive or negative, will be appreciated.
Thank-you so much for your help!
Thank-you,
Cathy Colwell
