Hi There Ms. Colwell,

In response to your questions, I've asked around my place of
employment here in San Jose, Calif., and came up with a range of
3 to 7 million
dollars to build a structure as shown with a foundation.
We all agreed that much, much more information is needed to come
to a more narrow price range and that a
project  like this would not
be something we would ever want to tackle.

I hope this can be of some help, but quite honestly it's a rough
Guess more than a rough Estimate. The type of work we are involved
with is general
fabrication of parts, or in your case, frames and tanks.
Not knowing the type of
steel, channels or I-Beams?, and other
detailed aspects of construction, do the tanks have
baffels?,and
would the tanks be slid in or lowered from the top?, what type of
support structure is required for each tank?, limits the accuracy
of my guesstimate.

Best of luck to you and your team,
Glenn Kerk

My response to Mr. Kerk:

Thank-you!

Even that range is better than not having any idea of what would be
acceptable ... we had estimated 10 million within the group.  It means
a lot to have your estimate as well.

The students have been working very hard, but obviously we are at the
point where details we are unable to provide would have to be part of
a real bid.

Thank-you for taking the time to help us, and we will use your higher-end
figure in our report.

Cathy Colwell

Mr. Kerk:

I am so sorry!  My students forgot to include the links to the
diagrams in their original email to you requesting a cost estimate for our
structure. The total weight of the sewage being processed in the plant at one
particular time is approximatly 12,000 tons.  There would also the
weight of the pumps, tanks, pipes, and the supporting structure.

Included are two rough drafts of the design of the proposed structure.
http://public.cctt.org/istf2000/finalform/building.htm and for a cad
diagram picture http://public.cctt.org/costya/cadplan.htm

I had previously told the students that Monday, February 28th at 5 PM
was  their deadline to allow me a day to complete a final proofreading.  In
reality, the ABSOLUTE latest that we can place new information into
our site is Tuesday, February 29th!  Is it still conceivable that you could
send us a proposal/rough estimate on the construction cost of such a structure
and it's foundation, independent of the cost of the land and  sewage
treatment components?  Your numbers are critical to the completion of one
component of the contest.

Thank you so very much for your time time and assistance and we
apologize again for the lateness of this request.

Gratefully indebted,
Cathy Colwell
