Science for the 21st Century

Our advanced biology curriculum
emphasizes cellular and molecular topics
such as electrogenic pumps, concentration gradients, allosteric enzymes,
coupled phosphorylations, electron transport systems, and enzyme cascades.
And our ninth grade students in Biology I Honors complete a
gel electrophoresis lab ......... in their ninth grade year.
Our curriculum also features our
Academy of Scientific
Inquiry
- a school within a school -
Students in this academy complete two years of science in the ninth grade,
two more year-long courses in the tenth grade,
two more year-long science courses as juniors,
and then complete two more year-long science courses as seniors.
In these eight year-long science classes, it is likely
that they will never
be required to learn anything whatsoever about the gullet of a paramecium.

We focus on ecology
and
molecular biology.
Rationale:
For citizens of the 21st century terms such as
"carrying capacity" and
"exponential growth"
will be fundamental to scientific literacy.

Understanding biology today
requires an appreciation
of concentration gradients, proton pumps, and
and enzyme catalysis.... among others.
